Val de Loire is the largest French site ever listed as UNESCO World Heritage. From Sully-sur-Loire to Chalonnes, 280 km have enjoyed UNESCO classification since 2000. The dozens of castles dotted around Val de Loire are inextricably linked to the rivers they stand beside. Put simply, from Chambord in Amboise, via Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau, these Renaissance wonders are forever bound to their rivers Loire, Cher and Indre.

A land shaped for the pleasure of the king
Even today, the landscapes of Val de Loire retain traces of the passage of some of the greatest names in history. Alongside illustrious castles, more modest and even intimate residences reveal themselves as witnesses of a golden age. From forests teeming with game, to fish-filled rivers, prairies and fertile hillsides, these landscapes – shaped by a royal presence – will delight your senses. In all seasons, they reveal themselves to visitors, walkers, cyclists or anyone in pursuit of tranquillity. Located a few kilometres from Amboise, the Maison de la Loire offers a programme of activities and exhibitions all year round. These present a discovery of the royal river, observing its fauna and flora.
Hiking in absolute tranquillity
In Amboise, these landscapes can be discovered on foot, along the many hiking trails that criss-cross the banks and hillsides. In addition, the signposted Loire à Vélo cycle route extends over 800 km from Nevers to the Atlantic. It crosses Val d’Amboise along picturesque tracks, offering panoramic views of the royal river and the Loire vineyards. Setting off from Amboise and the surrounding villages, signposted loops also allow visitors to explore the region. These run along the rivers, in the shade of the forests or even in the oceans of golden wheat.
