What can I do without a car ?
Have you come by train and wondering how to discover the region? Well, rest assured, Amboise can be discovered very easily on foot. A large part of its historic heart and most of its monuments, services and businesses are located within a limited perimeter. Many hiking trails criss-cross Val d’Amboise, between the vines and the forests. For those looking to take to the heights, hot-air balloons, ULMs and helicopters can lift you up to the seventh heaven! And for the most adventuring, canoes, gabares and toues (traditional Loire boats) will allow you to sail along the Loire and the Cher. On land, on the water or in the air, the castles of the Loire reveal themselves from every angle! Unless, of course, you prefer to discover them to the rhythm of your bicycle … If so, the following is for you!
For keen cyclists
First of all, there’s no need to have your own bike to enjoy the many cycling routes in Val d’Amboise. Several bike-rental agencies, including e-bikes, await you in the very heart of the royal city. To start off, head to the bridge! This is the starting point for several routes. Make your way along the Loire to the west via the Loire à Vélo route. It’s all flat and 100% safe, as close as possible to the most beautiful Loire landscapes. Tours is not so far away. To mix things up, follow loop no 47 via the magnificent Allée de Dierre. It links Amboise to the valley of the Cher over the course of a dozen kilometres, in the shade of a deep forest. Push on for a few more kilometres on the tow path and be amazed by the sumptuous Château de Chenonceau.
Rainy-day activities
No need for an umbrella to enjoy the Touraine Grand Aquarium and its hundreds of aquatic species. Our favourite? The terrifying silurus, typical of the waters of the Loire. Or perhaps you allow yourself to be lured in by the sweet scents of the Conservatoire de la Confiserie. The added extra? There, you can make your very own homemade lollipop! Prefer savoury to sweet? No need to worry! Push open the doors of a cave cellar and share an exceptional moment with a passionate winemaker.
Immersion in the vines
Caves and winemaking estates are the perfect place for unique experiences, getting up close and personal with the work of the winemakers. Why not share in the grape pickers work for an immersive morning? Snacks and pruning shears in hand. Or a summer picnic among the vines, rocked by the gentle birdsong? The Tourist Office has plenty of ideas up its sleeves!

When the sun’s rays begin to skim the waters of the Loire, sit down on the sand of the tip of the Île d’Or and marvel at the hot-air balloons flying overhead … It’s simply magical! And if you top it all off with a slice of toast with Tours rillettes paired with a little glass of Touraine-Amboise, the effect is doubled!
