The Royal Estate of Château Gaillard, a royal garden in the heart of Amboise

The Royal Estate of Château Gaillard, a must-see for relaxation in the heart of Amboise.

Located a stone’s throw from Clos Lucé, this castle invites you to discover the exceptional work of the Italian gardener Dom Pacello, as well as its monarchical past in the footsteps of Mary Stuart and Charles VIII.

The Royal Estate of Château Gaillard: An Enchanting Interlude in the Heart of Amboise

Upon entering the Royal Estate of Château Gaillard, just outside Amboise, you step into a preserved natural haven. Yet, the estate is located a stone’s throw from the town center. Here, nature expresses itself fully. Birds provide a rhythm to your visit, the rustling of leaves accompanies every step. The light plays with the shimmering colors of the flora. This place is a true breath of fresh air, a haven of serenity where time seems to stand still.

Walking along the park’s paths, you discover nature that is both free and carefully cultivated. Fifteen hectares of woods, meadows, and orchards. Nothing seems left to chance. Everything appears to be in perfect harmony between human ingenuity and the power of life.

In the Footsteps of Dom Pacello, Gardener to Kings

The reason why Château Gaillard is so unique, is thanks to the man known as “the Leonardo of Gardens”: Dom Pacello di Mercoliano. This monk-gardener came from Italy at the request of King Charles VIII. He shaped this estate during the Renaissance, making it the cradle of the first Italian-style gardens in France.

The heart of this visionary work is the orangery—a precious testament to a know-how from afar. It was here, in this light-filled space, that Dom Pacello first acclimatized orange trees to the Loire Valley. The orange, a symbol of a refined and sun-drenched way of life, continues to permeate the estate’s identity today. It’s everywhere: in the stained-glass windows, on the frescoes, around every corner, and even in the hand of the Venus de Milo that greets you at the entrance to the King’s Gardens.

A sensory and gourmet immersion

This orange theme accompanies the entire visit. It serves as both a guiding thread and an invitation to awaken the senses. Here, there are no souvenir trinkets: the estate’s philosophy is one of authenticity. Upon leaving, you’ll be delighted to take home artisanal and local products. Jams, honeys from the estate, and sweet treats naturally represent the traditional château souvenir. They extend the magic of the visit into the kitchen and can even be enjoyed on-site at the Le Mercoliano counter.

Château Gaillard, a living heritage

What is most striking is the current vitality of the site. The Royal Estate of Château Gaillard is not a static museum: it is a living, inhabited place, lovingly maintained by its owners and gardeners. Each path tells a story. Each vista reveals a detail carefully chosen to enhance the site and its history.

The walk is perfect for both contemplative visits and leisurely family strolls. Children love watching the fish swimming in the Masse, the river that flows through the estate. History buffs can imagine Charles VIII or Mary Stuart wandering through the gardens. A visit to Château Gaillard offers a fresh perspective on Amboise: one of tranquility and the harmonious blend of art and nature.

But if you want to discover more about what the château and its apartments hold, step inside and let yourself be captivated by the stories told by the guides.
