Pagode of Chanteloup

The Pagoda of Chanteloup: an unusual monument in Amboise
Located on the outskirts of Amboise, the Pagoda of Chanteloup is an emblematic monument of the Loire Valley heritage. Overlooking a verdant park, it offers a fascinating plunge into 18th-century history, and is a relaxing and exotic place to stroll and relax. A vestige of a splendid estate no longer in existence, it bears witness to the pomp and eccentricity of its patron, the Duc de Choiseul.

A history linked to the Duc de Choiseul
The Pagoda of Chanteloup is the last remaining evidence of an immense château and its magnificent gardens, built in the 18th century by the powerful Duc de Choiseul. Minister to Louis XV and favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, Étienne-François de Choiseul played a major political role before falling from grace and being exiled to Amboise. It was here that he built a sumptuous estate, where he gathered a brilliant society of intellectuals and courtiers.
The pagoda, erected in 1775, was conceived as a monument of friendship and gratitude to those who had remained loyal to him. Its original architecture, inspired by the orientalist tendencies in vogue at the time, makes it a unique curiosity in France. Unfortunately, after the French Revolution, the château was gradually abandoned and demolished, leaving only the pagoda and a few traces of the formal gardens.
Unique, breathtaking architecture
Standing 44 metres high, the Pagoda of Chanteloup is distinguished by its elegant silhouette and seven-storey architecture. Each level is accessed by a spiral staircase, offering increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Once at the top, visitors enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Amboise forest, the Loire Valley and the remains of the former estate.
Built of tufa stone and brick, the pagoda blends French classicism with Chinese influences. This exotic architecture illustrates the 18th-century craze for chinoiserie, reflecting a growing attraction to distant cultures.
