The Amboise Night Tour: A Journey Through Tales and Legends

In recent weeks, with a succession of days bringing intense heat, a growing trend has been observed in our towns and villages. Overwhelmed by the scorching daytime sun, residents and visitors alike have been venturing out in the evening to enjoy the more pleasant temperatures. Far from being the exception, we too sought out an activity that would allow us to enjoy the cool of the evening in Amboise. Since mid-July—and continuing every Thursday evening until August 20—the Val d’Amboise Tourist Office has been offering a theatrical tour known as “Amboise Nocturne.” Intrigued by the theme of “Tales and Legends of Touraine,” we decided to try it out for ourselves.

A guide who isn't afraid to speak her mind!

Conceived and designed by the Tourist Office’s team of guides, this night-time tour of Amboise launched in the summer of 2025 and found its audience right away—evidenced by the fact that every departure was fully booked during that first year. It is clear that the tour’s success shows no signs of waning. Around thirty visitors were waiting patiently outside the Tourist Office at 9 p.m. when a curious character burst onto the square. Dressed in a long blue gown and a lace blouse, and carrying a wicker basket overflowing with odds and ends, Louise—a peddler by trade—instantly set the scene. Older onlookers immediately recognized the classic traveling saleswoman of old: the kind who once wandered from village to village seeking customers for her ribbons, shirt buttons, and embroidery thread. But tonight, Louise invites us on a journey into the heart of Touraine’s tales and legends, all set against the backdrop of a summer evening in Amboise’s historic center.

We follow Louise along the banks of the Loire as the sun begins its slow descent toward the west. The “Royal River” has long inspired imaginative, poetic folk legends. The most historic of these tells of Clovis, King of the Franks, who is said to have cast a gold chalice set with precious stones into the Loire—a treasure countless seekers have tried to recover over the centuries. Beyond the legends, the Loire reveals ever-changing landscapes, exposing sandbanks and islets in the shadow of venerable châteaux—scenery designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The tour continues through the narrow streets of Amboise, bathed in the fading light—an atmosphere perfect for darker tales. Louise captures her audience’s attention by recounting the crimes of the Beast of the Loire Valley, a precursor to the Beast of Gévaudan. She vividly conveys the terror that gripped the people of Amboise and Touraine in the mid-18th century, when scores of children and young women were gruesomely devoured by a mysterious, monstrous creature. The small group presses close together as they continue on their way.

A night-time visit in a contemplative atmosphere

The walk takes in Place Michel Debré—Amboise’s bustling hub, alive with outdoor café terraces—situated at the foot of the Royal Chateau of Amboise. It then continues along Rue Victor Hugo, where the hillside is dotted with dozens of troglodyte dwellings. Night has fully fallen as Louise recounts the legend of the fairies who dwell within the rock, capable of bewitching even the bravest of men. And, as if by magic, the city lights go out the very instant Louise utters her final words—casting a veil of mystery over the moment!

Enchanting and captivating, the night tour of Amboise truly fascinated us! Rooted in authentic legends from the Touraine region, it sheds light on the fears and beliefs of the town’s inhabitants throughout the centuries—not to mention the significant role religion played in their daily lives. And the icing on the cake? It offers a chance to discover Amboise in a whole new light, far removed from the tourist bustle of a summer day.
