The Pagoda of Chanteloup: A Breath of the Orient in the Heart of the Loire Valley
Just a few minutes from the center of Amboise, nestled discreetly in the heart of a forest, lies one of the region’s most unique attractions: the Pagoda of Chanteloup.
Far from the bustle of the grand Renaissance châteaux, this place, suspended between two worlds, invites you on a completely different kind of escape: more intimate, more unexpected, almost timeless.
A Story of Friendship etched in Stone
Even before you see it appear around the bend in the road, the pagoda tells you a story. The story of Étienne-François de Choiseul, powerful minister to Louis XV, favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, who fell from grace and was exiled to Amboise.
Far from being discouraged, he had a sumptuous estate built there, where intellectuals and loyal courtiers gathered. The pagoda, built in 1775, was conceived as a monument of friendship and gratitude to those who had not abandoned it.
Sixteen marble plaques engraved with Chinese characters still adorn its facade, evoking peace between peoples and gratitude towards loyal friends. These profoundly human values give this place a rare soul.

A complete change of scenery just a stone's throw from Amboise
The visit begins with the Fû Hsi Chinese Garden, and the change of scenery is immediate. The oriental fragrances, the soothing decor, the gentle shapes of the garden… everything seeks to make you forget that you are in Touraine. For the duration of a stroll, you are transported elsewhere, into an atmosphere that is both serene and captivating.
Leaving the garden, a small tree-lined path leads you to the pond, and it is there that the pagoda appears in all its grace: 44 meters high, silently reflected in the mirror of water at its base. The sight is breathtaking, and the uniqueness of the structure only reinforces the feeling of having stumbled upon something truly precious.
A place to breathe, contemplate, savor.
What is perhaps most striking when strolling through this park is the quality of the silence. Visitors read in the shade of the trees, write by the water’s edge, letting their thoughts drift. It’s a world away from crowds and noise. Here, everyone seems to have found their own rhythm.
One tree catches the eye: small pieces of paper dance in the wind, carrying the wishes of those who came before you. A simple and touching gesture that speaks volumes about the atmosphere of the place.
For the more adventurous, climbing the pagoda to its summit offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding forest and, in the distance, the silhouette of the Royal Chateau of Amboise. A reward worthy of the effort.
And to extend your break, the site offers numerous ways to linger: a boat ride on the lake, wooden games for all ages, and a charming open-air tea room furnished with secondhand pieces. From April to September, you can even enjoy a picnic basket filled with local specialties.

A true escape
In a region dominated by the Loire River and its châteaux, the Pagoda of Chanteloup offers something truly precious. A place where history takes on a light touch, where East and West meet with elegance, and where it’s good to do nothing but simply be.
Whether you come with family, friends, or simply seeking a peaceful interlude, this place will welcome you in its own unique way: gentle, poetic, and a little bit otherworldly. An address to whisper in everyone’s ear.
