How does a segway work?

The Segway is an electric vehicle consisting of a platform above two wheels on which the user stands, and a steering handle. Its operation is modeled on the human body. This is why Segways are equipped with a stabilization system that allows the device to steer according to the user’s movements.

Regarding its handling, although it may seem complex at first glance, it is actually not. Indeed, since the Segway is naturally stabilized, once on board, we only need to lean forward to move forward or backward to reverse. As for lateral movement, we simply push the steering handle slightly to the left or right. And if the rider is standing upright, the device remains stationary. Note that the Segway was designed not to exceed 20 km/h.

Our segway experience with Freemove

Our experience as “Super-Pedestrians” began with a warm welcome from Nicolas. He began with an introduction to the Segway and its use.

After that, it was time to climb onto our Segways and practice steering and controlling them. This allowed us to gain confidence and make it easier to get used to the Segway. However, from the very first minutes, we were all surprised by how easy it was to use; it can be learned naturally in just a few minutes, even for novices. We were therefore able to set off on the tour with confidence.

Our tour then began with a short tour of the Île d’Or, allowing us to admire the banks of the Loire and the Royal Château of Amboise. Nicolas then took the opportunity to provide an initial cultural overview of the bridge that connects Amboise to the Île d’Or. We then continued towards the Market Square. Then we went to our first stop: the Church of Saint-Denis. It’s the oldest church in the town of Amboise, having been built in 1107 by Hugh I.

After that, we headed towards the heart of the town, passing through the old town and the Place du Château d’Amboise. We were able to follow the path formerly used by the Amasse River. We learned that this marked the boundary between Amboise and Saint-Denis Hors in medieval times.

We were also able to admire the famous Clock Tower, which was once one of the city gates of Amboise.

Next, we sailed around the Château d’Amboise, where several illustrious kings once resided. We then reached the heights of the city, stopping at Clos Lucé, the final resting place of the famous Leonardo da Vinci.

Finally, we were able to admire an exceptional panorama of the entire city of Amboise and its surroundings from the highest vantage point. Then, we descended through hidden alleys, from which we could observe the Loire.

Finally, we returned to our starting point on the Île d’Or to gently conclude our stroll, which was rich in emotions and full of discoveries.
